A ground wire’s purpose would be to direct any extra current safely to the ground. The surge connection in the shield stays inactive until a bigger than normal voltage seems. This extra current is then securely redirected through the excess earth cable, right into the ground. This prevents more current than normal from flowing to your appliances efficiently ensuring they are protected from any harm that can be caused by power surges.
