A ground wire’s purpose would be to direct any additional current safely into the floor. The surge link in the shield remains inactive until a larger than normal voltage appears. This extra current is then safely diverted through the extra earth cable, right into the ground. This prevents more current than normal from flowing into your appliances effectively ensuring that they are protected from any injury which could result from power surges.
